Born in the village of Nani Naroli in Gujarat, India, into a family for whom the Qurʾān was the ordinary furniture of the day.

Hadhrat Shaykh Yusuf Ibn Sulaiman Motala رحمة الله عليه
The academy carries the name of our teacher as a form of appreciation and an ever-lasting reward, inshāʾAllāh. His life was given to the teaching of the Qur'an and to the training of students who would carry that work forward.
IYMA continues that work in Bradford: the five daily prayers in jama'ah, weekly programmes for the community, and madrasah classes for children in ḥifẓ and nāẓirah.

A student of Shaykh Muḥammad Zakariyyā
He studied the sacred sciences at Maẓāhir ʿUlūm in Saharanpur, where he became a close student and later a khalīfah of Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Muḥammad Zakariyyā Kāndhlawī رحمة الله عليه.
Sent to Britain
At his teacher's instruction he came to England, to a Muslim community that had arrived to work and had almost nowhere to learn.
The first dār al-ʿulūm in Europe
He founded Darul Uloom al-Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah at Holcombe, Bury — the first institution of its kind in Europe — and a network of schools and seminaries grew from it.
His passing
He passed away in 1441 / 2019, leaving thousands of students teaching across Britain and beyond. This academy carries his name as ṣadaqah jāriyah for him, inshāʾAllāh.
